The last two years of high school, we had a Japanese exchange student who lived with our family. She quickly became another sister. I like to joke that she is the mother of my parents' grandchildren.

Since the earthquake, I've been understandably worried about her.

Just got an email from my folks, forwarded on from her. She's safe, everyone is okay. There are inconveniences, but no rampant disease or starving from food shortages.

I'm glad she's okay.
